Blackfish, the new documentary from Gabriela Cowperthwaite, will be distributed by U.K.’s Dogwoof, after having inked a deal with NBCUnviversal. The documentary, nominated for a British Academy of Film and Television Award, had a world premiere at Sundance in 2013.
Ana Vincente, head of theatrical for Dogwoof, told The Hollywood Reporter, "This deal [with NBCUniversal] is the culmination of an amazing year for Blackfish. It so rewarding to see how passionate Universal feels about Blackfish, which is what we at Dogwoof look for in the partners for the films we represent.”
Gabriela Cowperthwaite wrote and directed the film nominated for Best Documentary at the BAFTA Awards. Blackfish is the story of Tilikum, a whale that killed several people, including a whale trainer, while in captivity. The film features Sea World trainers and extraordinary footage of the killer whale. According to Variety, Cowperthwaite said that films like hers can affect change.
Dogwoof is set to distribute the documentary in Asia, Italy, Portugal, Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, Scandinavia and Latin America. Blackfish has aired already on CNN in the United States.
