Amazon is reportedly getting ready to launch its own TV set-top box, entering a field dominated by Roku and Apple TV. The Internet streaming device would allow you to watch videos and movies on your television.
Sources for Recode said that the device should be ready as soon as March, although Amazon isn’t commenting on anything. The site also reported that the device would use Google’s Android operating system.
This news is hardly surprising. Last fall, there were reports that Amazon was going to have a device reader for the 2013 holiday season, but that did not happen. There were also reports last month that the company was interested in its own Pay-TV service, but amazon denied that.
Obviously, Amazon is looking to branch out into original content and a set-top device would go a long way to get that content to more viewers. The company recently launched its second pilot season with 10 shows that viewers will get to review and help decide which shows get picked up. Across the pond, Amazon also brought its LoveFilm service under the Amazon Prime U.K. umbrella to make that service more appealing than Netflix.
