Now that Flappy Bird is no longer available, Sony Pictures and Rovio has to be hopeful that everyone goes back to playing Angry Birds. The movie studio and the Finnish video game company behind the app that is still massively popular, which will be produced in Vancouver.
The Toronto Star notes that Rovio announced that Sony Pictures Imageworks will animate the film at the Vancouver studio.
“It was very important for Rovio to find the perfect partner — in style, talent and location — to bring the Angry Birds movie to life, and Sony Pictures Imageworks in Vancouver made that decision easy,” Rovio CEO Mikael Hed said in a statement.
Back in October, Sony and Rovio announced that Clay Kaytis, a Disney veteran, and Fergal Reilly, who worked on Sony’s Hotel Transylvania, are directing the film. It is not expected to hit theaters until July 1, 2016.
Meanwhile, Rovio did recently announce a new Angry Birds spin-off, called Angry Birds Stella. Hed said last week that this spin-off will feature a stronger story than previous editions.
“The Angry Birds Stella story will live and evolve across physical and digital, bridging them in fun and innovative ways,” Hed said. “Stella and her friends are here to stay, with plenty of adventures ahead of them.”
