It may be hard to believe, but there is just two months before the first Boston Marathon since the bombings at the previous marathon in April 2013. Organizers today announced plans for a tribute to the victims and survivors of the bombing, which left three dead and over 260 injured.
On April 15, the one-year anniversary of the attack, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh will speak with survivors, family members and first responders on a stage at the Hynes Convention Center, reports Boston Magazine. The One Fund charity is coordinating the event.
The Associated Press notes that the event will end with a moment of silence and a flag-raising ceremony.
“On April 15, we recall the courage, compassion, and commitment of our great city and its people,” Walsh stated. “Through this event, Boston again stands as one: paying tribute to all those affected by last year’s events and once again showing the world that Boston’s spirit of resiliency lives on.”
At the moment, the event is only for invited guests, but more details will be released at a later date.
The 2014 Boston Marathon is slated for April 21.
The trial of the surviving suspect of the bombing, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, is scheduled to start in November.
