Captain Phillips’ Oscar run is suddenly picking up steam. After winning a Writers Guild Award last week, the true story of an American ship taken over by Somali pirates has picked up another win. Last night, the film picked up the American Cinema Editors Award for best editing of a dramatic film.
The favorite for the Eddie Award had been Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, but Paul Greengrass’ film pulled off the upset, notes TheWrap. Greengrass also received the previously announced 2014 ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award.
While Phillips is one of the nine films up for the Best Picture Oscar, Greengrass’ lack of a nomination for Best Director made it a long shot. But the film won Best Adapted Screenplay at the WGAs last week and clearly the editors’ guild liked the film. Editor Christopher Rouse is up for the Best Editing at the Oscars, and that’s a key prize for any Best Picture winner. Argo won both the Eddie, the Oscar and Best Picture last year.
Still, 12 Years A Slave, Gravity and American Hustle should remain front-runners for the top Oscar. They were also all nominees for Best Editing. The fifth nominee in the category is Dallas Buyers Club, another Best Picture nominee.
Speaking of American Hustle, it became the second straight David O. Russell movie to win the comedy/musical category. The film beat The Wolf of Wall Street and Inside Llewyn Davis. Hustle was edited by Jay Cassidy, Crispin Struthers and Alan Baumgarten.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Frozen’s Jeff Draheim won the animated feature prize. Douglas Blush, Kevin Klauber and Jason Zeldes won for editing the documentary 20 Feet From Stardom.
Other winners included the editors for the Office finale, Breaking Bad’s “Felina” episode and Homeland’s “Big Man in Tehran” episode. Mary Ann Bernard won for editing Behind the Candelabra.
