El Salvador castaway Jorge Salvador Alvarenga left the hospital Tuesday after multiple tests determining his mental state.
The 37-year-old Salvadoran, who claims to have been lost at sea for 13 months, spent the last week at a local hospital where doctors have been tending to both his physical and mental needs. He was supposed to be released a few days ago, but extended his stay due to concerns of his mental state.
Yahoo reports that Alvarenga has vowed to not return to the ocean “for the moment.” Alvarenga also told reporters that he did not eat the fisherman that had been with him when he initially went missing, but that he had died of hunger.
Alvarenga left the hospital with his family and health minister, Maria Isabel Rodriguez. Rodriguez said that Alvarenga will likely be moving because his home is along the coast.
“I don’t know if it was decided that he’ll be taken to another house, because of the problem he had of fear of the sea,” Rodriguez said.
According to Daily Mail, Alvarenga says he survived by eating raw fish out of the sea and daily prayer.
