The Tupac Shakur biopic is one step closer to becoming a reality. John Singleton, who had been interested in the project for years, has finally signed on to direct the film and work on the script.
Singleton will direct and produce, as well as re-write the script for Morgan Creek and Emmett/Furla/Oasis, reports Variety. The Oscar-nominated director has wanted to make the project for a long time, but talks stalled and the project lingered in development hell. Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) was then interested, but dropped out after casting and writing didn’t go as well as hoped.
The project finally got the greenlight last fall and the producers announced a Spring 2014 start for filming. However, at that time, Singleton was still not signed and there remains no actor attached to play the iconic rapper.
Singleton appears to be the perfect choice for the project, as he actually worked with Tupac on Poetic Justice. Tupac’s life and career ended when he was murdered in 1996 in Las Vegas.
Singleton was nominated for two Oscars for Boyz N The Hood and also directed 2 Fast 2 Furious. His latest film was 2011’s Abduction with Taylor Lautner.
Production on the Tupac film will now start in June.
