Patton Oswalt, host of the Independent Spirit Awards, found himself one sketch shorter in preparing for the awards ceremony.

The actor and comedian intended to perform with live birds during the broadcast, according to the LA Times. While speaking to press, Oswalt said that a dove and other birds were supposed to be handled by presenters and winners alike during the awards. In rehearsals, the actor found rehearsing with the birds to be impossible. The stunt got cut, as Oswalt found that going to the birds just wasn’t an option.
