While the console wars of the past decade have been dominated by Sony and Microsoft, in the 1990s, it was all about Nintendo and SEGA. Now, the battle between the two companies is being turned into a book, which is already being put together as a film from Sony.
Atlantic Books publisher Toby Mundy has acquired Blake Harris’ Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo and the Battle that Defined a Generation, which will be published in August, the publisher said Thursday.
The war between Nintendo and SEGA is credited with boosting a dying industry, which generated $50 billion in 2013. Harris’ book features interviews with those involved behind-the-scenes at Nintendo and SEGA to examine how the war between Super Nintendo and SEGA Genesis exploded.
Sony and Scott Rudin (Moneyball, The Social Network, No Country for Old Men) already snapped up the film rights. They have assigned Seth Rogen and his creative partner Evan Goldberg to work on the film. They will write and direct with Harris as executive producer. Rudin, Rogen and Goldberg are also producing a documentary on the subject, which Harris is co-directing.
It looks like video game history is now a popular topic in Hollywood. Back in December, a documentary on the notorious Atari E.T. game was announced. It will the first installment of an XBox original series.
As for Goldberg and Rogen, they recently directed the comedy hit This Is The End. The two are adapting the comic series Preacher for AMC.
