Warner Bros.' The Lego Movie flew past all the competition, especially the two other newcomers, at the weekend box office.
Lego Movie took in $69.1 million for the weekend, beating early box office expectations. The animated film had a strong opening on Friday with more than $17 million and that success carried over on Saturday and Sunday. The strong opening also tracks only behind Passion of the Christ ($83 million) for biggest February opening, reports TheWrap.
George Clooney's The Monument's Men offered no competition for the weekend with $22.7 million. Despite being in theaters nearly a month, Kevin Hart's Ride Along actually came in third with $9.3 million.
Disney's Frozen continues to have life and snagged $6.9 million for the weekend and That Awkward Moment earned an additional $5.5 million, to round out the top five. The other new movie of the weekend Vampire Academy proved to be largely ignored and only managed $4.1 million.
According to Forbes, Warner Bros. film could possibly see continued success over the next few weekends as there isn't much in the way of competition for family films, until March 7 when DreamWorks Animation's Mr. Peabody and Sherman hits theaters.
The only other larger release films due out for February are films, studios likely don't have overwhelming confidence in, including Pompeii, Three Days To Kill and next weekend's Robocop.
