After the arrest of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the leader of the Sinaloa drug Cartel, the Chairman of the Homeland Security committee, Representative Michael McCaul, is asking the Mexican government to extradite the drug lord to the United States.

McCaul said that, “I would ask that the Mexicans consider extraditing him to the United States where he would be put into a Supermax prison under tight security where he cannot escape,” noting that Guzman escaped a Mexican prison back in 2001, according to NY Daily News.

According to The Wall Street Journal, McCaul also said that it was surprising that the new administration under President Peña Nieto has taken down Los Zetas leader and now “El Chapo.” It was expected that Nieto would let drug trafficking continue in exchange for a decrease in violence.

The drug lord was captured on Saturday in a joint effort operation by the United States and the Mexican Marines, who are most notably the only ones who have not been run over with corruption. Guzman grew up in poverty, until he associated himself with Colombia drug lord Pablo Escobar, and then created his own cartel by establishing outposts in different towns, and later taking over some of his mentor’s territory when he passed.
