Before his death in 2010 at the young age of 29, Jay Reatard recorded a cover of Nirvana’s “Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle,” off of In Utero.

The cover is featured on the compilation In Utero: In Tribute, which is available on vinyl as well as a digital copy and is expected to come out on April 19th, also known as Record Store Day.

The anticipated compilation includes a unique cover of every single In Utero song by different artists including, Circa survive, Ceremony, Daughters, Thursday and more. The release date will be shortly after the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducts Nirvana, according to Rolling Stone.

Reatard takes a new approach to his cover by including sounds of a dog barking in the background and puts a large emphasis on nasally vocals. He particularly appeals to overwhelming emotion the song contains through his rare vocal performance and stellar guitar solo. Nirvana fans can find solace in knowing that Reatard poured his heart and soul into the song through gritiness and new ideas—he even played every instrument on the recording himself, as reported by Under The Radar.

Dave Grohl, previous drummer for Nirvana, told Rolling Stone that Frances Farmer acted as a turning point in Nirvana’s evolution. Without this song, there may not have ever been another Nirvana record—scary thought.
