Lorde finally got the chance to meet the inspiration for her song “Royals”, Major League Baseball hall of famer George Brett.
The meeting took place before Lorde’s concert in Las Vegas on Tuesday night, according to Crave Online.
The hit song “Royals” refers to “Maybachs” and “drinking Cristal”, so fans would most likely think that Lorde is alluding to something in pop culture. It may come as a surprise, however, that a photograph of Kansas City Royal George Brett signing autographs was actually her inspiration, reports Deadspin.
In an interview last year, Lorde explained how she “had this image from the National Geographic of this dude just signing baseballs.”
“He was a baseball player and his shirt said, 'Royals’,” she said. “It was just that word. It’s really cool,”
It was later confirmed that the picture was of George Brett, published in July 1976.
Brett couldn’t stay for the concert on Tuesday, but he did give Lorde a gift she’ll surely appreciate—an autographed jersey on which he wrote “Lorde, you are Royal to me”.
