Laura Jane Klug has been suspended from her teaching job in the Lumberton Independent School District in Texas after several parents sent complaints about the substitute teacher being a transgender.

According to 12 News, Klug met with the school district and was informed that they were pending a decision on whether or not she would remain as a substitute teacher in the school system.

Parents of students are concerned and are not happy with the school choosing to hire a transgender substitute.

"If it does affect my child and his ability to learn or if it causes questions that I don't feel are appropriate then undoubtedly there's an issue with having somebody transgender, transsexual or transvestite, to be teaching that age group," parent Roger Beard said.

While some parents are worried, there are some who do not have any problem with the teacher.

"My son knows who he is and I don't think any outside influence is going to change that," parent Jammie Marcantel said. "I'm more concerned about straight predatory teachers rather than I am someone who lives an alternative private alternate lifestyle. I don't worry about my son."

Klug has subbed at the school before and she is confused as to why it is suddenly an issue.

"I have always conducted myself in a professional manner and would never discuss my gender identity in school," Klug said.

KHOU reported that no one has yet been fired, but the school district will gather to place a vote. There is not a law protecting employees based on sexual orientation or identity.
