Prosecutors say they have charged 17-year-old Detroit teen with murder for his role in the beating of a motorist who stopped to offer help after accidentally hitting a younger boy with his truck.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Bruce Wimbush will be tried as an adult. Reuters reports Wimbrush was charged for assault with intent to murder and intent to do great bodily harm.
A 16-year-old also was arrested, but has not yet been charged.
Wimbush was involved in the beating of 54-year-old Steven Utash on Wednesday after the man pulled over with the intentions of offering aid. About 10 or 12 people rushed over after the accident and proceeded to beat up Utash.
The motorist remains in critical condition in a hospital after suffering much worse injuries than the 10-year-old boy, David Harris, he hit. Harris was admitted for a leg injury and has since left the hospital.
As previously reported, police said Utash won't be charged as it was clearly an accident when he hit the kid. They say the kid stepped off the curb and there was little the driver could do at that point.
"No way he could have stopped in time," Sgt. Michael Woody said at a news conference on Thursday. "The man did try to stop and render aid. He did everything he could exactly right."
