The comedy The Other Woman is expected to make just enough money at the box office this weekend to finally knock Captain America: The Winter Soldier from the top. However, Sony’s Christian film Heaven is for Real has become a wild card.
Analysts are torn over The Other Woman and The Winter Soldier. Box Office Mojo predicts that the female comedy - starring Leslie Mann, Cameron Diaz and Kate Upton - will come out on top with just $17 million. Fox is hoping for an opening around that area and is screening the film at 3,204 locations.
Entertainment Weekly is more reluctant to predict that The Other Woman will make that much. After all, if The Winter Soldier only falls around 40 percent from last week, that would give it $15 million. The Marvel film has been a summer blockbuster in the spring, making $200.5 million in North America after three weeks.
Rio 2 is expected to fall at least 40 percent from the previous weekend. That would put it at around $13 million. It remains the only kids film in theaters right now (with Frozen out of the way, finally), so families looking to spend time at the movies together may still want to check this one out. It did drop a whopping 50 percent last weekend to just $22.2 million, so it might take another steep fall.
Heaven Is For Real is a real mystery. EW suggests that the film, which made $22.5 million on its opening weekend, will only make $8 million, but Box Office Mojo is more optimistic. That site predicts as much as $14 million. Forbes notes that if Heaven only drops 31 percent, that would give it $15.5 million, which could be enough to even top The Winter Soldier.
One thing is for sure this weekend though, both Brick Mansions and The Quiet Ones will score weak openings. Brick Mansions may draw some extra audiences because it’s the last completed film for actor Paul Walker. Meanwhile, The Quiet Ones is a British horror movie that Lionsgate hasn’t spent any money advertising.
You can check out other movies opening this weekend at Trailer Park.
