On Friday, Marvel made the shocking announcement that director Edgar Wright has left Ant-Man, despite being attached to the project for years. That left Marvel fans wondering what on earth happened. Meanwhile, The Avengers director Joss Whedon and Guardians of the Galaxy helmer James Gunn had responded to Wright’s departure.

Wright left Marvel on “amicable” terms, at least according to the studio. Marvel must have a replacement already in mind, since the studio said the change won’t affect that Paul Rudd-starring film’s July 17, 2015 release date.

As AceShowBiz notes, Whedon appeared to show support for Wright on Twitter, which a picture of himself holding up Cornetto ice cream. That’s a reference to Wright’s famous “Cornetto Trilogy,” which includes Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and last year’s The World’s End.

Gunn had a more interesting response on Facebook, with a lengthy post about how relationships often break down when the two people involved might realize that they just aren’t right for each other. “And that's true of both Edgar Wright and Marvel. One of them isn't a person, but I think you get what I mean,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, Latino Review claims that the real reason why Wright left was over script disagreements. Marvel apparently took the script away from him and Joe Cornish and gave it to two other writers. Wright tried to stay on, but eventually told Marvel on Friday that the movie was no longer matching his vision and left.
