Westboro Baptist Church has announced they will protest Maya Angelou’s funeral. The legendary poet, author and activist died at the age of 86 on Wednesday.
That same day, the controversial post denounced her legacy and posted a series of hateful message about her on Twitter.
“No RIP Maya Angelou. She was a staunch devil child who esteemed the love of the world more than the honor of God,” they wrote.
When retweeting a Huffington Post article about Angelou’s support of the LGBT community, they wrote, “Evidence that Maya's in hell.”
As we previously reported, Angelou passed away in her hometown of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. While she’s best known for her memoir, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, she also had many other talents and became the first African American woman to direct a film in Hollywood in 1998.
Official funeral arrangements haven’t been announced, but her longtime church, Mount Zion Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, held a memorial service on Thursday.
