A 111-year-old woman in Virginia received her high school diploma 96 years after she left the school.
WTKR reported that Lela Babb Burden received her diploma on Tuesday from Norfolk's Booker T. Washington High School.
The station reported the city’s schools faced a temporary shutdown in 1918 because of a bad flu epidemic. The schools told the kids to stay home so they would not spread germs and the schools closed.
By the time the public school reopened, the then 15-year-old Burden had started working two jobs and never returned to the school. Still, Burden always valued her education and was finally presented with her diploma at a special graduation ceremony.
She is now an inspiration to so many, proving that it’s never too late to get a diploma and she insist that age is merely a number.
KNOE 8 News noted that despite being one of the world’s oldest women, Burden still remains active in her community where she has lived for the past 107 years.
