The remains of a woman were discovered in a Walmart parking lot on Thursday and authorities said that she could have died there three weeks prior.
According to the Cecil Whig newspaper, the woman’s corpse was discovered lying in a 2002 Chrysler Sebring parked in the lot in Elkton, Maryland; not far from the Delaware border.
A groundskeeper, searching for the source of a foul smell, ended up finding the decomposing body.
Elkton police spokesman Lt. Joseph Zurolo said that surveillance footage captured the car, which had Delaware plates, pull into the lot on May 29. A woman then got out of the front seat and went into the back seat. She was never seen alive again.
The News Journal noted that Zurolo said the deceased may have been a woman previously reported missing to police.
Investigators are trying to piece together exactly what happened, but said that they do not suspect foul play.
The body of the woman, who has yet to be identified, was taken to the Maryland State Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy.
