Marvel Studios has announced that they will be tapping writer Jon Spaihts to write the script for the upcoming Doctor Strange film. Directed by Scott Derrickson (pictured below), the film will launch a franchise for Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme.
Spaihts quite familiar with writing science fiction and fantasy. While most known for his work on Prometheus, Ridley Scott’s recent prequel to Alien, Spaihts, as noted by The Hollywood Reporter, also wrote the science fiction romance film Passengers, and is also penning Universal’s reboot of The Mummy.
For the unfamiliar, Doctor Strange was a character created in 1963 by the powerhouse creative duo of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Strange was originally a neurosurgeon, but soon becomes the “Sorcerer Supreme,” spending his days protecting the Earth through a mix of sorcery, intellect, and even martial arts.
The film will be produced by Kevin Feige and will be directed, as noted in an article from TheCelebrityCafe, by Scott Derrickson of Sinister fame.
According to Deadline, Marvel seems to be putting the film on a fast track at the moment, and has even compiled a short list of actors that include Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jared Leto.
