The world’s oldest man passed away on Sunday at his home in New York City.

NBC News reported that friends caring for Dr. Alexander Imich said that he died peacefully in his Manhattan apartment at 9:03 a.m.

Guinness World Records gave the 111-year-old the title of the world’s oldest living man after Italian man, Arturo Licata, died before his 112th birthday, the Gerontology Research Group noted.

During an interview last month, Imich said that he believed good genes and a healthy lifestyle are what contributed to his longevity.

Imich was born in 1903 in present-day Poland and came to the United States in 1951. He had been a widower since 1986.

He was a retired chemist and parapsychologist and was the oldest war veteran and oldest person to have a doctorate degree.

Guinness is now investigating the claim that 111-year-old Sakari Momoi of Japan will become the world's oldest living man.

The world’s oldest living person at 116, is a woman named Misao Okawa also from Japan.
