The parents of a two-year-old who was mauled to death in 2012 after he fell into a wild dogs exhibit, settled a lawsuit with the zoo on Monday.

The Associated Press reported that Maddox Derkosh’s parents and the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium issued a joint statement after the settlement.

"Details of the settlement will remain confidential. The Derkosh family and the zoo request that the privacy of all parties involved be respected," the statement said.

Two years ago, the toddler fell from his mother’s grasp over a wooden railing and into the African dog exhibit after she lifted him up. The dogs attacked the boy as his distraught mother tried to climb into the cage and rescue him. She was restrained by another zoo visitor.

According to the Bangor Daily News, Derkosh’s parents filed a wrongful death and negligence suit in 2013, seeking a minimum of $300,000.

Zoo officials maintained that it met safety requirements during all inspections.

The exhibit has since closed and the dogs were relocated.
