Michael Bay's fourth entry in the Transformers series, Transformers: Age of Extinction, has become not only the biggest movie of the summer, but the biggest of the year, as its $100 million opening weekend debut is the first movie to cross the triple digit line in 2014.

As the Wall Street Journal reports, the new Transformers movie has surpassed Captain America: The Winter Solider as having the best opening weekend of the year. The later film made $95 million during its first weekend. But, more impressive than that, the movie has already made $201.3 million worldwide, with $90 million of that profit coming from China alone.

This follows the film's record-breaking Friday opening, where the movie made nearly half of its box office earnings with $41.6 million.

In relation to the other Transformers movies, the fourth film ranks just under Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as the series best opening. Revenge of the Fallen made just $8.9 million more. Although the budget of the movie is reported to be around $210 million, it looks like the movie has earned a profit, thereby making the already announced fifth film in 2016 justified, at least from a box office perspective.
