The Chicago Bulls have decided to release forward Carlos Boozer, using their amnesty clause.

The Bulls will save Boozer’s $16.8 million that he was owed this year, according to ESPN.

The team needs the cap space to sign Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic to new contracts. Gasol is expected receive a three-year deal worth around $22 million and Mirotic is expected to receive an $18 million deal for three-years.

The Bulls general manager Gar Forman released a statement on Boozer’s amnesty.

“Carlos epitomized professionalism in everything he did for the Bulls both on the court, and in the community, during his time here in Chicago,” he said. “Over the last four seasons, Carlos’ productivity elevated our team to another level. I have nothing but respect for Carlos, and certainly wish him the best as he moves forward.

Any team that is under the salary cap is allowed to bid for Boozer. The highest bidder gets to sign him. If no team makes a bid in 48 hours, Boozer will become a free agent, according to SB Nation.

According to Yahoo Sports, the Charlotte Hornets could be a front runner to bid for Boozer because of their need for a veteran power forward.

Boozer thanked the Bulls twitter for the past four years.

In his 12-year career, Boozer has averaged 16.6 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game.
