A third installment to The Ring is in development from Paramount, and today we got official word about who will be directing this latest film.
According to Deadline, The Ring 3 is set to be directed by Spanish filmmaker F. Javier Gutiérrez. In addition to a few short films, Gutiérrez has previously directed Before the Fall, a Spanish film about an an impending meteorite strike.
Gutiérrez has also been in talks to direct a remake of The Crow for several years, according to Slashfilm.
The Ring franchise debuted in America in 2002, directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Naomi Watts. Based on an immensely popular Japanese horror film, the franchise is about a video tape that kills its viewer in seven days.
The first film grossed $129 million domestic and $250 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, which prompted a sequel. The Ring Two grossed $76 million domestic and $160 million worldwide.
In Japan, the Ringu franchise continued long past one sequel, spawning five sequels and spinoffs with the most recent, Sadako 3D 2, released in 2013.
Paramount has not yet released plot details or information about who will write the film. It is also not yet clear if Naomi Watts will return to reprise her role as Rachel, which she played in both The Ring and The Ring Two.
