Filmmaker and super geek Kevin Smith visited the set of Star Wars: Episode VII, which made him actually shed a tear. Smith talked about the set visit while at a film festival in Switzerland and gave details on what he saw that made him so emotional.

As previously reported, Smith posted a single Instagram picture last week of a selfie that showed a single tear coming down his cheek. “The Force is WITH this movie. Holy Sith,” he wrote in the caption.

While he could not spill any beans on the plot, he did talk about the set visit in more detail with an audience at the Neuchatel International Film Festival. According to Slash Film, he revealed that he saw Stormtroopers in action, noting that it was all real and not a set filled with bluescreen.

“I saw uniforms, I saw artillery I haven’t seen since I was a kid. I saw them shooting an actual sequence in a set that was real,” Smith told the crowd. “I walked across the set, there were explosions. And it looked like a shot right out of a Star Wars movie.”

Smith also said that he visited the Millenium Falcon set at Pinewood Studios, although filming was not underway. Again, he marveled at director J.J. Abrams’ decision to build physical sets and ships, rather than rely on CGI, like what George Lucas did for the prequels.

“As I walked up that ramp I realized that the something that was missing from those other movies [the prequels] and it’s now in these movies,” Smith said. “And its not the obvious like hey the Millennium Falcon or hey the characters that we know are returning. Its something else entirely — he’s building a tactile world, a world you can touch.”

Over the weekend, Disney announced that Pip Andersen and Crystal Clarke have joined the cast. While production has been postponed for two weeks for Harrison Ford to recover for his injury, Disney is still hoping to release the film on Dec. 18, 2015.
