Another big-budget Broadway musical is taking a bullet. Bullets Over Broadway, an adaptation of the Woody Allen film fronted by Zach Braff, is closing earlier than planned.

Bullets is based on the 1994 film, in which John Cusack played a 1920s writer who gets mixed up with the criminal underworld. While the film is considered one of Allen’s best from the ‘90s, the musical only earned mixed reviews when it opened in April.

According to The New York Times, ticket sales have stalled in recent weeks. This past week, it only generated $686,693, just 45 percent of the possible gross. Clearly, a $14 million musical can’t continue with those numbers and will be closing on Aug. 24.

By the time it closes, Bullets will have played 33 previews and 156 regular shows at the St. James Theatre. Deadline reports that the musical starred Braff, Helene Yorke, Brooks Ashmanskas and Nick Cordero.

Every Broadway season has seen at least one movie-to-musical flop since The Producers was a smash, but this year has two. Rocky The Musical, which cost $15 million to produce, is also closing in August.

At least Braff will have some extra time to promote Wish I Was Here.
