Transformers: Age of Extinction has become the first film of 2014 to surpass the $1 billion profit mark. The film has been out since June and hit the milestone in just five weeks.

Transformers: Age of Extinction is the fourth installment of the ‘Transformers’ series, which is helmed by famous action movie director Michael Bay. The first two films starred Shia LeBeouf and Megan Fox. The third film replaced Fox with Victoria’s Secret model Rose Huntington-Whitely. However, the fourth and most recent addition stars acting veteran Mark Wahlberg in an effort to liven up the series.

According to Variety, Transformers: Age of Extinction has made a killing at the box office this summer. However, the big budget action film apparently could not have done so well without one particularly influential market: Chinese moviegoers. The film made over $300 million in China alone, which tops domestic figures set at nearly $242 million. The film continues to draw in both international and domestic audiences during its fifth week out for release.

Michael Bay’s production company, Platinum Dunes, has received a lengthy extension on a first-look deal. Transformers: Age of Extinction made over $100 million during it’s opening weekend.
