Usually, when a celebrity is nominated for an award, they show up at the ceremony and their attendance isn’t news. But not everyone is Miley Cyrus and not every awards show is the MTV Video Music Awards. Considering that her performance at last year’s show unleashed a new Cyrus onto the world, the fact that she will be going to the show this year is a big deal.
As Us Weekly pointed out, Cyrus’ team tweeted Wednesday that the “Wrecking Ball” singer and professional twerker will be at the awards.
“BREAKING: Miley Cyrus will attend the VMAS on Sunday night,” the simple message read. It was later retweeted by the VMAs’ official Twitter page.
Cyrus was nominated for two awards, so while she hasn’t been announced as a performer, her attendance isn’t a complete shock. Her “Wrecking Ball” video was nominated for Video of the Year and Best Direction.
Her competition for Video of the Year includes Beyonce’s “Drunk in Love,” Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy,” Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” and “Chandelier” by Sia.
Of course, Cyrus shocked the world with her VMAs performance last year, even sparking complaints from the FCC. She showed off a preview of her Bangerz tour shows, complete with giant teddy bears and her now-trademark tongue wagging. Robin Thicke was also in the mix, since he performed “Blurred Lines.”
The VMAs are on Sunday. Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande and Jessie J are opening the show with “Bang Bang.”
