Lionsgsate’s reboot of the long-running TV franchise Power Rangers has finally been given a release date: July 22, 2016.

The film will be a complete reimagining of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, according to Variety. The first series in the Power Rangers franchise, it featured a group of high school friends bestowed with extraterrestrial powers and giant robot suits, tasked with saving the world.

There have been two previous feature films based on the series, both starring members of the original cast of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but both were massive flops at the box office. However, with the decade-long success of young adult fiction, superheroes, and 80s/90s nostalgia properties, it would seem that there is no better time to bring the Power Rangers back to the silver screen then now.

2016 is shaping up to be a massive year for blockbusters. Warcraft, Batman v. Superman, Captain America 3, Warcraft, Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, X-Men: Apocalypse, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, and Finding Dory only cover the first half of the year. Power Rangers is currently set to release against Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur, but will find a real challenge the following week with Matt Reeve’s second Planet of the Apes film.

Series creator Haim Saban, and Roberto Orci are set to produce. Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are currently working on the screenplay.
