Sony is reportedly interested in the Bridesmaid director taking the helm for the long-gestating Ghostbusters 3.

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter, the studio and Feig are both interested, but no formal negotiations have begun to land the director. At this point, he is merely the frontrunner.

The project has yet to ever get that far along, with Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman opting to leave the project back in March.

The script has also been a work in progress, with Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg having written the script after rumors of Max Landis stepping in were debunked. The script had to be reworked following Harold Ramis' passing earlier this year.

At the moment, Ghostbusters 3 is set to follow a new group, with some of the original Ghostbuster cast showing up to turn over control to a younger crew. While Bill Murray hasn't decided, Dan Aykroyd is set to return.

Feig is currently working on the Melissa McCarthy-starring film Spy. The action comedy is scheduled for a May 25, 2015 release.
