Wyoming woman hit and killed by bus at Burning Man

A woman from Wyoming was hit and killed by a bus on Thursday morning at Burning Man in the Nevada desert.

The 29-year-old woman was identified as Alicia Louise Cipicchio and was the only victim in the accident, the Pershing County sheriff's office said, The Associated Press reports.

Cipicchio was struck by the passenger bus just shortly after midnight and died at the scene. She was staying at the Black Rock City area.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and campmates," Marian Goodell, Burning Man co-founder, said. "Black Rock Rangers and Emergency Services Department staff are providing support to those affected."

Earlier RGJ reported that Burning Man spokesman Jim Graham told reporters that it isn't yet known whether or not drugs or alcohol played a part in the tragic accident. In the temporary city of Black Rock City vehicles are only allowed to travel at 5 mph though.

The event had to temporarily shutter earlier in the week after heavy rains, but on Tuesday it was allowed to open again. Rains hit the desert and made it dangerous for any vehicles in the area, causing Burning Man to have to announce the delay.
