Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper actually made three movies together in the past three years, but we’ve only seen two of them. That’s because Susanne Bier’s Serena has been delayed until now. Lucky attendees at the BFI London Film Festival next month will get to see it, although the film still has no U.S. distributor.
Despite the A-list talent attached to the film - an Oscar winning actress, an Oscar nominated actor and an Oscar winning director - Serena has been pushed back several times over the past year. At one point, the movie was scheduled for a U.S. release in September 2013, but that didn’t happen.
While Bier (In A Better World) continued tinkering with the film, it was rescheduled, but not here. According to Yahoo, the movie got an Oct. 24 U.K. release date. That’s just days before the BFI festival screening on Oct. 13. Indiewire notes that this should be the film’s world premiere.
Interest in the film rose again this past week, since The Stylist released a new still, which shows Lawrence riding a horse.
Serena is a period piece, based on the best selling 2008 novel by Ron Rash. The stars play a married couple who create a timber empire in North Carolina. Serena (Lawrence) goes to extreme lengths to protect that business venture. The movie was filmed between Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle.
According to a 2013 THR report, Fox Searchlight and The Weinstein Company were both interested in picking up U.S. rights, but neither have done so.
