Reddit has finally taken action against the subreddit that shared links to the stolen nude photos that were nicknamed “The Fappening.”
KPopStarz reported that Reddit is trying to avoid legal action by banning the stolen nude images.
“Every Man Is Responsible for his own soul,” Reddit posted on the now banned subreddit. “While current US law does not prohibit linking to stolen materials, we deplore the theft of these images and we do not condone their widespread distribution. We understand the harm that misusing out site does to the victims of this theft, and we deeply sympathize.”
“The Fappening” refers to the leaked images that a hacker stole from celebrities through iCloud. Celebrities that were targeted include Jennifer Lawrence, Victoria Justice, McKayla Maroney, Kirsten Dunst, and Kate Upton.
TheCelebrityCafe.com reported that both the FBI and Apple are investigating who is behind the massive leak. Both Victoria Justice and Jennifer Lawrence are taking legal action on anyone who posts the images due to the fact they were stolen.
Olympian McKayla Maroney’s attorney had her photos removed from the Internet by claiming his client was underage at the time the pictures were taken, we previously reported.
Reddit is one of few websites that have removed the photos for ethical, not legal reasons. Many porn sites are already distributing the photos, although that may be stopped after it is proven that the images were stolen.
