A terrifying scene unfolded Friday morning in San Francisco when a window washer fell several stories onto a moving car below.

NBC News reported that the male window washer fell 11 stories from the top of the Sterling Bank and Trust building in the city’s financial district and landed atop a moving car.

When the worker fell onto the car, the glass immediately shattered while he rolled onto the ground. Many bystanders who were on the street rushed to his side after he fell.

He sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he reportedly underwent surgery, but there has not been any further update on his condition.

The driver of the vehicle did not suffer any physical injuries, but was understandably shaken after the incident.

Reuters noted that San Francisco Police officer Albie Esparza said that the victim fell just as he was getting ready to work around 10 a.m.

Authorities said he was moving equipment onto the building’s roof and not on a platform when the accident happened but officials are continuing to investigate.
