Charli XCX admits her career might not have exploded the way it did if Hilary Duff hadn’t passed on a song she eventually recorded and turned into a hit.
The “Boom Clap” singer revealed to V Magazine that she actually wrote the song and offered it to Hilary Duff, whose team shot it down.
"We sent the song to her people and I don't think she ever heard it. But they were like, ‘This song isn't cool enough for Hilary.' And we were really sad about that! So I was like, 'F--k it. I'm going to sing it,'" she explained.
That might’ve been one of the best decisions of her career, as it went on to become a massive hit.
She said after it came out, she heard from Duff. She said the former Lizzie McGuire star “tweeted me, ‘Hey, I really like your song! I wish I'd known that I could've had it.' And I was like, ‘Too late, Hilary. Too late.'"
Charli XCX, who also wrote Icona Pop’s “I Love It,” described her album Sucker as a middle finger to her doubters.
“It’s a big f--- you to all of the people who doubted me as an artist, who doubted me as a songwriter, or who questioned my validity and why I was in the position that I was in,” she explained. “That’s me being angry and being a b---- on the record, and I really enjoy playing that song, because it gives me a sense of satisfaction every time.”
