Hunger Games fans who have always wanted to see Katniss Everdeen in action in 3D will finally get their wish. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 will be the first film in the franchise released in 3D. Plus, it will also be released in IMAX.
“Fans will now have the chance to see the film in any format they want,” director Francis Lawrence said in a statement today.
Lionsgate probably made the move earlier to avoid what happened with Mockingjay - Part 1. The studio wasn’t able to release it in IMAX this past November since Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar was still taking up IMAX screens nationwide.
However, the other films in the franchise were released in IMAX, albeit in 2D. In November 2013, Catching Fire grossed $18 million in its first weekend from IMAX screenings alone. The first film also had a limited IMAX run in 2012.
Mockingjay 1 wound up with the worst opening weekend of the franchise, grossing “only” $121.9 million. It did have the best Thanksgiving weekend in history and became the top-grossing film of 2014, topping Guardians of the Galaxy.
Mockingjay 2 is the final film in the Hunger Games series, based on Suzanne Collins’ novels. The franchise stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson.
