It’s hunting season for John Woo. The famed action director will be helming a remake of Manhunt.
Deadline reported that film Woo will begin filming Manhunt this year after completing his two-part epic,The Crossing. His first film in four years, The Crossing will be released in 3-D.
Manhunt is based on the novel Kimi Yo Funnu No Kawa O Watare by Japanese author Juko Nishimura. It was originally adapted in 1976 by Junya Sato. The plot follows a prosecutor who sets out to clear his name after being accused of rape, murder and robbery. The original film is notable for being the first foreign film released in China after the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1978.
Woo will direct the film for Media Asia, as they hold the rights to the novel. According to ScreenDaily, Media Asia chairman Peter Lam offered the job to Woo after learning that the director was a fan of the original film’s star, the late Ken Takakura. Reportedly, Woo accepted the challenge in a heartbeat.
