Disney loves making money off its familiar properties, but one that it has always struggled with is Tron. After Tron: Legacy failed to be the smash hit it hoped for, the studio hemmed and hawed about making a new movie. But now it looks like they are finally ready to give director Joseph Kosinski the green light.
News about Tron 3 seemed to come out of nowhere from a report by the local Vancouver site VanCityBuzz.com. The site claims that filming will start on Oct. 5, citing sources. This seems to be a reliable site, as they also reported that Star Trek 3 would start filming in June. In addition, Vancouver is currently a hot location for Hollywood projects.
A source also told BadAssDigest that Kosinski is still on tap to direct and that the movie is really happening.
At the moment, only Garrett Hedlund is set to return. The actor said in a December 2012 interview that he is “excited” to play Sam Flynn again. Around that time, Disney also hired a new writer, Jesse Wigutow.
The Tron franchise kicked off with the 1982 cult film, which featured a revolutionary mix of computer graphics and live-action and starred Jeff Bridges. Legacy, which also starred Bridges and Olivia Wilde, cost Disney a reported $170 million to make, grossing $400 million worldwide in 2010.
Of course, the issue with both films is that they put visuals ahead of the story. In the case of Legacy, one of the best things about it was actually Daft Punk’s soundtrack. Hopefully for the third movie, Disney and Kosinski can get a good story to work with.
