The social media network Twitter has changed its rules to ban users from putting out “revenge porn” on its site.
BBC News noted that Twitter has changed its privacy rules in an attempt to keep “revenge porn” from being tweeted out.
BuzzFeed reported that Twitter also changed its abusive behavior policy.
The modified rules are as follows:
“Users may not make direct, specific threats of violence against others, including threats against a person or group on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, age, or disability. In addition, users may not post intimate photos or videos that were taken or distributed without the subject’s consent.”
If a user violates the new rules, the company will lock the accounts unless the offending information is deleted. Repeated offenders will have their accounts suspended.
The crackdown comes after Twitter CEO Dick Costolo admitted last month that the micro-bogging site has been losing users because of its problem in tackling online trolls. These new steps have been established to address such issues.
“Revenge porn” is an offense in England and Wales and some U.S. states including California, Texas and Utah have “revenge porn” laws in place.
