The Fast and Furious movies just can’t be stopped, and the new installment has shattered records for Universal Studios.
According to Deadline, Furious 7 has officially crossed $1 billion worldwide, becoming the fastest film ever to pass this threshold. The movie was able to do so in just 17 days. Before this, the record was held by Avatar, which reached $1 billion in 19 days. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and The Avengers also reached $1 billion in the same amount of time as Avatar.
Not only is Furious 7 the fastest movie to make this much money, it’s also the first Universal film to ever pass $1 billion in its theatrical run. The only other Universal film to make that much was Jurassic Park, but that takes into account the 2013 3D re-release. Furious 7 is their first movie to make $1 billion in its original run.
The total gross of Furious 7 is going to be downright massive then, considering it will still be in theaters for a while longer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie is expected to make about $1.3 billion by the end of its run. That would put it in the top five highest grossing movies of all time, according to Box Office Mojo. Currently Frozen is #5 with $1.2 billion, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is #4 with $1.3 billion, and The Avengers is #3 with $1.5 billion. Avatar still holds the top spot with an insane $2.7 billion.
For comparison, the previous film in the franchise, Fast and Furious 6, made $778 million in its entire 105 day run.
The Fast and Furious movies have become an absolute juggernaut at the box office, and one of the franchises that just keeps getting more and more popular. The fact that Furious 7 is becoming one of the highest grossing films in history is pretty crazy considering this franchise started with a $38 million racing movie in 2001 that made just over $200 million. We’ve come a long way.
