A man was arrested in Washington D.C. after landing a gyrocopter on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol building.

CNN noted that the pilot of the small copter was taken into custody Wednesday immediately after he managed to land the aircraft on the grounds.

"The U.S. Capitol Police is investigating a gyrocopter with a single occupant that has landed on the grassy area of the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The U.S. Capitol Police continues to investigate with one person detained and temporary street closures in the immediate area," Capitol Police Lt. Kimberly Schneider said in a statement.

The Tampa Bay Times has identified that occupant as Doug Hughes, 61, a mailman from Ruskin, Florida.

House Homeland Security panel Chairman Michael McCaul, R-Texas, said that Hughes landed on his own, but if he had gotten any closer to the building authorities were prepared to shoot him and the chopper down.

A robot bomb detector was dispatched to check the aircraft for any explosives.
