A 12-year-old Chicago girl finally got her wish granted this week when pop star Taylor Swift gave her a call, the girl’s mother said.

Nadia Beasley told NBC Chicago that Swift called Emily, who is sadly nearing the end of a battle with a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Her doctors stopped treatment last week after determining that it was so aggressive that they could not do anything more for her.

“The smile on my daughter [is one] I have not seen in a very, very long time,” Beasley said. “I could cry.”

Beasley said that Swift talked with Emily for 10 minutes while the family was in the car. Swift said that she had heard Emily’s story, including how a Chicago block was named for her and how her neighbors have put green and purple colors on their homes.

Swift also said that she was touched to hear that her music helped Emily through her tough times.

Cancer has hit Swift’s own family. Earlier this month, she announced that her mother was diagnosed with cancer.

The “Shake It Off” singer has always been open to being generous with her fans. In 2013, she took a cancer survivor to the ACM Awards. She’s also made donations for an education center at the Country Music Hall of Fame and donated $50,000 to New York City public schools.
