Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron is already on the road to earning the highest-grossing debut weekend of all time. The film, earned over $27 million from Thursday night screenings and even set the Thursday record for IMAX screenings.
Age of Ultron finished the night with $27.6 million, far more than the $18.7 million Thursday The Avengers had in 2012. According to Exhibitor Relations, $3 million of that came from IMAX. That breaks the Thursday record of $2.3 million set by The Dark Knight Rises.
As the Hollywood Reporter points out, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 still holds the record for Thursday night with $43.5 million when it opened in 2011.
In 2012, The Avengers had the biggest ever debut weekend with $207.4 million. Early tracking for Ultron suggested that it would break that, which should be exactly what happens. It’s going to break that mark, easily.
Ultron was already released overseas last weekend and is already up to $287.3 million from foreign markets. Add in what it made Thursday in North America and the movie is already up to $314.9 million before its first weekend here. This movie should be at over $500 million after less than two weeks.
