The low budget, highly inventive horror/sci-fi film Cube is getting a reboot from Lionsgate.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Saman Kesh is attached to direct Cubed, a reimagining of the 1997 film directed by Vincenzo Natali.
The film will be produced by Roy Lee, who has produced an insane amount of movies in recent years including The Lego Movie, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and the upcoming Poltergeist remake. Also signed on to produce is Jon Spaihts, co-writer of Prometheus and of the upcoming Marvel film Doctor Strange.
The new movie, Cubed, seems to be more of a reboot/reimagining than a flat out remake. It will be written by Philip Gawthorne. It will once again be a sci-fi thriller and will apparently be about AI and "the birth of a new 'digital' race," according to The Verge.
This will be the feature length debut of Saman Kesh, who got a lot of attention with his short film Controller in 2013.
Cube was a pretty simple little movie from 1997 about a group of strangers who wake up trapped in a mysterious cube. It was made for a budget of only $350,000 and spawned two sequels: Cube 2: Hypercube and Cube Zero. It proved somewhat difficult to continue the franchise, though, considering the first movie was so simple and really functioned pretty well by itself. Part of the charm was also how minimalist it was, something taken away as the storyline was expanded in the sequels. Let's hope that Cubed is also to bring it back to the genius of the original movie.
