Robin Williams left a great legacy of characters following his unfortunate passing last year, but Dennis the Dog is the one which graces the screen last in Absolutely Anything. While without an official release date in the U.S., the first snippets of his work can be seen in the film's first trailer, which just hit the web.
As something of a British Bruce Almighty, Absolutely Anything also steams as a Monty Python film reunion of sorts, as Terry Jones (Life of Brian, Monty Python and the Holy Grail) directs and provides voice work alongside living Python members Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, John Cleese and Michael Palin as a team of extraterrestrial who decide to put the fate of humanity in the stake of one random man (Simon Pegg) whose given unlimited capabilities, but must unknowingly use them for good to keep his planet alive. As expected, such powers are not put to noble tasks at first, as our main characters uses his abilities to make his dog (Williams) take, his canine's poop clean itself and also give himself a better body, in more ways than one.
Also starring Kate Beckinsale, Eddie Izzard, Rob Riggle, Joanna Lumley and Sanjeev Bhaskar, there's undoubtedly a lot of potential here, and that it's the cinematic return of the Python crew — even if in just voice form — is tantalizing undoubtedly. That it feels compelled to go for lowbrow humor all-so-often is a bit discouraging, but it does look like Absolutely Anything will also live up to its potential in some choice moments. It's a promising start, at the very least, so let's just hope this new comedy brings the same laughs the original Python films did in their heyday.
When Williams' passed, there were rumors he didn't finish his work on this movie and may have needed to be replaced, but it looks as though his part was either cut down or adjusted to keep the actor's performance in tact. Meanwhile, this isn't the first time Williams' last performance was seen/heard, as Deadline reported back in December that a clip featuring the actor was posted online. This mentioned scene is abridged but also found in this new trailer.
While it's unclear when U.S. audiences can see Absolutely Anything, it's released in the U.K. on August 14. Check out the trailer below:
