Director Barry Levinson isn't quite producing his finest features of late, but that doesn't mean he still can't rake in a stellar cast. Bill Murray, Zooey Deschanel, Bruce Willis, Danny McBride, Kate Hudson and Scott Caan all headline his latest, which finds them all on a world-wind venture rocking The Clash's signature titular tune — even if the song doesn't appear in the movie's first trailer.
Open Road Films unveiled the footage, via JoBlo. The comedy finds Murray as Richie Lanz, a washed-up rock manager who takes his last remaining client (Deschanel) on a USO tour in Afghanistan, only to find himself in a dangerous position or two when she disappears with his money and passport. From there, Lanz bands up, no pun intended, with a group of misfits. One of which, he grows to discover, is a girl with an extraordinary voice.
A comedic treasure in every right, Murray only occasionally finds himself in a hit these days unless he's working under Wes Anderson. People seemed to enjoy St. Vincent just fine, but apparently Aloha didn't live up to its expectations. And that's not even including shrug worthy efforts like A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III and The Monuments Men.
But to Levinson's latest credit, this one looks like it could be a good bit of fun, at least if they let Murray enjoy himself in his element. As seen by his final Letterman appearance, the man still knows how to make an impression. Hopefully, this translates onto the screen again with this fish-out-of-water project.
