The roaster on Spike Lee's new film, the Amazon-funded Chiraq, remains a rotating calender even when filming begins. However, three stars are now officially on board to star in his Chicago-based film: Dave Chappelle, Wesley Snipes and Nick Cannon.
Chappelle's involvement was confirmed by Lee himself via his Instagram, with a picture of him and the Chappelle's Show creator sitting together and the following caption underneath: "The Great David Chapelle Is All Aboard Da CHA-RAQ Peace Train. YA-DIG? SHO-NUFF. Our Peace Train Is Smokin' Cuz We Ain't Jokin'."
With his casting, Chiraq, or Chi-Raq as it is spelt on the movie's clapperboards in pictures also found on the filmmaker's Instagram, becomes Chappelle's first acting credit since his original Comedy Central program.
Snipes and Cannon's involvement, meanwhile, was revealed by Chicago Tribune. It's not clear what role the former plays in the movie, but the report says the America's Got Talent host plays a rapper. All three actors join John Cusack, whom the trade announces now plays a character based on St. Sabina pastor Rev. Michael Pfleger, as well as apparently D.B. Sweeney, reported to play the mayor.
The rest of the cast is not particularly clear. Rumors speculate Samuel L. Jackson and Jennifer Hudson are in the movie, and although earlier reports said Common and Jeremy Piven are involved, it's no longer official if they're still signed on. Additionally, Kanye West was among those rumored to play a character in Lee's musical comedy, and it's confirmed he doesn't act in the movie, he may contribute to its soundtrack.
The plot of Lee's latest joint centers on a woman who strives to end gang warfare in the city, but this is all that's known so far about Lee's controversial new film, other than it's a re-imagining of the ancient Greek comedy Lysistrata. Production began on Monday for Chiraq, a.k.a. Chi-Raq, and continues through July 10.
Snipes returned to acting just last year with The Expendables 3, and comes to the world of television soon as NBC picked up his new series The Player. Cannon, when also not on NBC in his hosting position, recently starred in a supporting role on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. And while Chappelle hasn't been in the acting spotlight of late, he still got his name in some recent headlines.
