A manhunt that lasted just over three weeks has finally come to an end as prison escapee and convicted killer David Sweat was shot and captured on Sunday.
CNN noted that authorities said Sweat was spotted by New York State Police Sgt. Jay Cook near the Canadian border in the town of Constable. The inmate began to run and Cook, who was by himself at the time, chased him. Fearing that he might lose the escapee, Cook fired his weapon
"At some point, running across a field, he realized that Sweat was going to make it to a tree line, and possibly could have disappeared, and he fired two shots," New York State Police Superintendent Joseph A. D'Amico said.
Sweat was hit twice in the torso and taken into custody.
At a press conference on Sunday evening, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo praised Cook, calling him a hero.
Sweat’s capture ends a 22-day manhunt in which more than 1,000 law enforcement officials were deployed to the area after he and Richard Matt broke out of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora.
As previously reported, Matt was fatally shot in Franklin County on Friday.
